Is it possible to have an STI and not know it?
Absolutely. You can be infected with an STI and not have any symptoms. You can pass on infections, without knowing it as well. The only way to be sure of your status is to be tested.
What are the symptoms of common STIs?
Chlamydia - 75% of women and 50% of men who are infected show no symptoms. However, symptoms include discharge from genital organs, burning with urination, and lower abdominal/pelvic pain for women.
Gonorrhea - There are frequently no symptoms among women. Symptoms include discharge from genital organs, burning or itching with urination, and pelvic pain. If left untreated, both gonorrhea and chlamydia can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
Syphilis - Painless sores on genitals (10 days to 3 months after infection) and a rash (3-6 weeks after sores appear).
HIV/AIDS - No symptoms may occur for years, until symptoms of AIDS occur.
HPV - Genital warts (sometimes warts are not visible).
Genital Herpes - Itching, burning, or pain in the genital area. Blister or sores (sores always heal, but can re-appear throughout your life).
